Tour Concept
SINGING INTO THE MYSTIC is a journey that looks to access, through singing, the India of the imagination, of its holy men, of its religious tradition and sacred places. As the mystic seeks to transcend ordinary human knowledge or seeks unity with a Diety or an absolute, we will seek to touch part of India that is dedicated to a world beyond the mundane. The connective tissue, as with all Sound Tracks programs, will be singing and music.
In fleeting moments we hope to experience the mystical world of India. Whether it be as we sing to desert children in Jaisalmer ; or when we hang out with the Sadhus; or sing with a Hindu musician; or chant across the Ganges in Varanasi. It might be when we connect to Rajasthani gyspy musicians and their families, swathed in colour in the desert or chant with Tibetan monks in Dharmashala.
Our path takes us from Delhi to Jaisalmer to Varanasi to Amritsar to Dharmashala and back to Delhi. We travel under the guidance of a man dedicated to music and spirituality through his study and his observances - Professor Santiago Lusardi Girelli.
Santiago, an Italian born in Argentina, spent his early adulthood training in the monastic tradition at the Taize Monastery in France, while leading the monastery choir. During that time he lived under the guidance of the old monks and of the founder of the Taize tradition - Brother Roger. Later, while a Catholic noviciate in Buenos Aires, he led a community that focused on the search for spiritual experience through the practice of the arts and singing and the contemplation of beauty. There Santiago studied theology and performed sacred music for many years in different Argentinian Diocesis, also under the advice of Cardinal Bergoglio, who went onto become the current Pope Francis.
After leaving the seminary, and with a Master degrees in Orchestra and Choir Conduction and Philosophy, and a PhD in Hinduist and Buddhist Aesthetics and Philosophy, Santiago left to work documenting the music of the natives in the Amazon.
Santiago's passion for scholarship, for the mystical journey and his love of music and the creative process makes him the perfect guide for such an esoteric and profoundly ambitious journey.
Santiago is the creator and artistic director of the acclaimed Kevetan World Sacred Music Festival in Goa, while currently holding the Anthony Gonsalves Chair as Visiting Research Professor at the Goa University in India. He has conducted choirs and orchestras, professional and amateurs, around the world throughout more than 400 concerts and performances in four continents, and led music tours in several countries, from the Amazonas Rain Forest to Leipzig-Germany (J.S. Bach's city); and from Peruvian Machu Pichu to the Indian Himalayas. He is also a composer who has premiered and published sacred choral music exploring the links between Western Choral music and Buddhist phenomenology and Hindu ritualism.
Santiago recently composed and performed an original piece for His Holiness The Dalai Lama with his Goa University Choir. The occasion was to launch the only university chair established in conjunction with His Holiness - Ancient Buddhist Philosophy & School of Conflict Resolution - at Goa University.
On this extraordinary adventure, Santiago's informed commentary will give meaning and context to our experience. His contacts with Indian musicians will be just as valuable, providing an opportunity to touch another world, surely the purpose of true travel. Each morning commences with yoga, meditation and singing, a process by which the Singing into the Mystic experience can permeate into your soul. Our intention is to sing in soft performance modes in Varanasi and Dharamshala, as well as in temples and places of beauty and significance.
We are embarking upon a journey that is destined to fail, but ironically that very gesture - attempting to touch the mystical heart of India - takes us some way there, and gives us the opportunity to momentarily rise above the mundane and soar into the mystic.
A WORD FROM SANTIAGO
"In this trip we will be interacting with the Indian musical heritage in its various forms. Thoughout our exploration we will create a dialogue between the several Indian traditions and art forms and our western choral tradition. This conversation is a continuous leiv motiv that inspires our trip, an interchange between "them" and "us" to open the doors to several complex and beautiful musical forms and expressions.
We will enhance the musical possibilities by adding an Indian musician with whom I have collaborated on a number of performances - Subhash Parvar. This young classical vocalist and swarmandal instrumentalist has had a meteroic career. His talent, kindness and understanding of Indian music will lead us to enter a mystical heritage and musical space that has inspired millions for millenniums."
In this journey, we seek an intercultural artistic dialogue to lead us not only to the roots of rituality, religious expression and Hindu and Buddhist mysticism with its connections to the Western musical and aesthetic traditions, but also to a direct experience of the philosophical and artistic foundations of the Indian culture itself.
I am aware this may all seem beyond our grasp, but with the daily yoga, singing, meditation and chanting sessions that merge with our travels, we hope that our experience goes beyond words to inhabit a deep sense of Indian mysticism.

A personal perspective
Over years of leading choirs into beautiful places throughout Australia there have been many wondrous experiences: recitals in sea caves on the wild coast of Tasmania; pop-up gigs in remote pubs, in outback woolsheds and in lonely churches.
One such experience was so sublime that it has never left me, and it resonates still in the design of Singing to the Heart.
At night the desert landscape of Australia mirrors a Shakespearean set, landscape a principal player, stage lighting provided by moon and stars, theatre props of shadowed rocks and spikey grevillias. All the while a sub-plot underpins the scene, the sense that Indigenous people lived and conducted ceremony here for thousands of years.

The jet lag issue with India is not huge, but if you were chosing to spend some extra time I would suggest you go earler to acclimatise. Our program will be pretty intense.

ACCOMMODATION
The choice of hotels was absolutely vital to the design of the Indian project. We needed to balance comfort and reliable cuisine with a hotel that was close enough to the action for people to walk to cafes and sites in an area and where they could feel safe. We also wanted character and a great space in which to rehearse. I am completely satisfied that the painstaking research has yielded brilliant hotels.

FLIGHTS
We have chosen to fly rather than use road links between cities. Road travel is exhausting and extremely slow in most cases. Hence we fly from Delhi to Jaisalmer, Jaisalmer to Varanasi, Varanasi to Amritsar, Amritsar to Dharamshala and then back to Delhi. All flights are included in the tour.
The maximum baggage allowance is 15kgs for checked luggage and 7Kg for carry-on. While excess bagge is available it is expensive and time consuming to process at the airport. My suggestion is to stay within the limits for ease of air travel.
FOOD REQUIREMENTS
India, with all its different religions, is quite practised at designing meals for specific requirements. My initial investigations are that vegan and gluten free can be catered for. We have decided to control the food story within hotels and/or known restaurants so as it ensure the quality.
With such a complex trip, with so many moving parts, we are concentrating in offering good nutritious and clean food, rather than a culinary tour of India. Our story is about singing and connection to India, and will not be about fine dining.
MONEY
I will send notes later about having a supply of Indian currency in small demoninations before we commence the tour. ATMs in India are notoriously unreliable, and can take hours out of the day. We want to streamline everything so we remove timely distractions.

We ask that you bring the best part of yourself. Most travel experiences provide a list of answers. The outcome is known. SINGING INDIA asks questions: what can we achieve? how can we connect to Indian people? what will the gigs be like? how can we meld into the soundscape of India? We are by nature a creative touring entity who are travelling to India to give as much as to receive. That requires bold, intelliegent and gutsy people able to step up to the creative plate and deliver.

Without any concrete plans to film SINGING INTO THE MYSTIC, the possibility exists to film and record the recitals and general tour environment. Born in Buenos Aires in 1979, Santiago is an Argentinian-Italian Music Conductor, Philosopher and Scholar of the philosophical traditions of the East and West. Dr. Lusardi Girelli has worked as lecturer and choir and orchestra conductor and in more than 20 countries in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia for the last 20 years.
He holds Master degrees in Orchestra and Choir Conduction and Philosophy, and a PhD in Aesthetics and Philosophy. As the result more than ten years of research on Indian Philosophy he has published his Thesis on Buddhist Phenomenology and Hindu Ritualism and its links with Western Music Choral Tradition.
Santiago has conducted choirs and orchestras, professional and amateurs, around the world throughout more than 400 concerts, and leaded music tours in several countries, from the Amazonas Rain Forest to Leipzig-Germany (J.S. Bach´s city); and from Peruvian Machu Pichu to the Indian Himalayas. His enthusiasm, leadership and passion for music, philosophy and cultures have led him to accomplish several important achievements and recognitions that have earned him the esteem of the local and international press alike.
Furthermore, Santiago has been involved in a wide range of music educational cooperation projects around the globe as researcher, music director and educator, as the worldwide known EL SISTEMA in Latin America for more 5 years; and as composer and researcher he has released dozens of original compositions of choral and orchestra music, combining ancient music traditions with contemporary composing techniques. He has published articles and essays on philosophy, music and theology as well. As Music director and composer he released more than 30 album productions, and conducted hundreds of symphonic, choral, opera and musical concerts.
Currently located in Spain and India, Dr. Santiago Lusardi Girelli holds the Anthony Gonsalves Chair as Visiting Research Professor at the Goa University in India, working as lecturing professor and conductor of the Goa University Choir. He also collaborates as Lecturer, Composer and Guest Conductor with different Universities and professional orchestras from South America, Africa, Europe and India.
A keen musicologist and philosopher Dr. Lusardi Girelli has initiated several projects in philosophy, culture and music appreciation around the world, as the Sadhana Researching Retreats on meditation and art appreciation, and two community experiences based on the philosophy of Gurdjeff and Krishnamurti. For more than 30 years he has received instruction on meditation and yoga, and has initiated several projects to introduce young people to this technics, relating the practices yoga and meditation with the teachings of different philosophical currents of the East and choral music.
Furthermore, he regularly delivers lectures, pre- concert talks, pen articles and program notes for different projects in Europe, Latin America and India, and has published articles on several magazines, symposiums and congresses on topics related to philosophy music and arts. He has been committed to many educational initiatives that helped bringing classical music to young children including the music performance programs initiated by the University of Seville, which provides local talents the possibility to flourish at internationally recognized standards. Santiago did several researches on Buddhist phenomenology and ritualism in north India, Argentina and Spain; and on Baroque Vocal Music of Moxos and Chiquitania ́s archives in Latin America, in the Amazonas Rain forest, in the Altiplano and in the Inca Sacred Valley.
He studied with several renamed maestros, guru ́s, composers and conductors and philosophy and art & music celebrities round the world such as Martin Palmeri (Argentina), José Carlos Carmona (Spain), Antonio Abreu (Venezuela), A. Alonso (France), Julio Domínguez (Spain) Roberto Perez (Argentina), Indra Devi (India), G. Céspedes (Colombia), N. Andrenacci (Argentina), G Anandamurti (India), W. Ptaff (Germany), and vocal performance with Mirella Frenni (Italy).
Dr. Lusardi Girelli leads in addition an intense activity in the scope of International Cooperation, as the director and founder of the cooperation group Social Development through Music & Arts which has achieved since 2008 more than 20 cooperation works in different regions of South America, Africa and India and hosted more than 200 volunteers. The Cooperation work attends children and young people pedagogically and offers education to young teachers of different music programs in 3 continents.
He is Creator and Artistic director of the acclaimed Ketevan World Sacred Music Festival, a project of musical and artistic coexistence -a space where the language of music becomes a bridge to connect and foster dialogue among cultures- based in India since 2015 in the UNESCO Heritage City of Old Goa.

Raymond Hawkins - owner of SOUND TRACKS TRAVEL - has operated ecletic tours all over Australia for decades. Before that he toured with some of Australia greatest bands - Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel and The Angels as tour manager, lighting designer and/or production manager. He has worked with Opera Australia, The Sydney Dance Company and ran the Audio/Visual Department at the Sydney Opera House.
Raymond created the Burra Gospel & Soul Festivale, operates and designed the BackRoaders tours and ran the Desert Choir program with Tony Backhouse for almost a decade, and now designs extraordinary musical programs that delve deep into the social and cultural world through which they travel. He’s different, and so are his programs.

Subhash Pavar is a young Indian semi-classical and classical vocalist and swarmandal instrumentalist. He has had a meteoric rise within the Indian classical music scene. His talent, kindness and understanding of Indian music will assist us to enter a mystical heritage and musical space that has inspired millions for millenniums.

The background characters to Singing India are the extraordinarily diverse array of people who we will meet over the 15 days.
They are the musicians, the street sweepers, the young people working in hotels and the beggars on the street. They are the holy men, and mothers and gypsies and children. They are the mesmerizing array of humanity that will make you want to return to India again and again. If our trip has been successful, it is they who will become our guides.
